Q. How can I obtain an application?
A. Please visit the State’s web site,
www.state.tn.us/commerce/sfm/fpplsect.html , to download an application. You may also call 615-741-1322. Once the State approves your application, you will receive a scheduling form to schedule the examination with PCS.
Q. How much is the examination fee?
A. The examination fee for first time candidates or re-examinees is $160.
Q. When is the examination held?
A. The examination is held on the second Tuesday of each month.
Q. Where is the examination held?
A. The examination is held in a central location that will accommodate the most candidates. Candidates will indicate their first, second and third site choices on the scheduling form. Please note there is no guarantee candidates will be assigned to their first choice. Failure to mark a second and third site choice could result in a delay in testing. Candidates will be assigned to the next available examination date for one of the site choices indicated on their scheduling form. The site choices are: Chattanooga, Jackson, Johnson City, Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee.
Q. Is there a deadline to schedule for an examination?
A. Yes. Please refer to the PCS web site. The deadline is always the last Tuesday of each month.
Q. When will I be told of my site location?
A. PCS will mail an admission packet to you approximately 7 days prior to your examination date. The admission packet contains an admission card (which has the site address), testing instructions and a site map.
Q. Can I cancel my examination?
A. You may withdraw from the examination but you will not receive a refund. Also, postponements or transfer of fees are not allowed.
Q. Where can I obtain study materials?
A. The examination is based on standards published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Please contact NFPA at 1-800-344-3555 or a local contractor's supply store.

Q. Is this an open book examination?
A. Yes, Reference materials are the candidates responsibility. PCS will not provide any reference materials at the examination. Examinees may bring their own copy of National Fuel Gas Code, Standard for Storage and Handling of LP Gas, NFPA 54-2006, and NFPA 58-2008 for use during the examination.
Q. When will I get my examination results?
A. Results are mailed to candidates and the State within 10 business days of the examination. The State continues the licensing process for passing candidates. Failing candidates may reapply to take a future examination with PCS.
Q. What type of photo identification is required?
A. A 2 X 2 Passport Photo. If you do not have a passport photo, a photocopy of your Driver’s License will be acceptable.
Q. Can the scheduling form be faxed?
A. Yes, it may be faxed with a Credit Card Number in the payment section. The fax number is 615-846-0153. Make it to the attention of “Tennessee Fire Protection Coordinator”.
